Band Box
Taking the place of Squeezer’s after its closure in 1955, the Band Box swiftly built a reputation of its own during its short, four year run. The club featured musicians like Terry Gibbs and Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, and on one day, a particularly memorable group. On Easter Sunday in 1956, Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Clifford Brown, and George Morrow graced the stage to play for a small audience of “a dozen or so,” and, despite the bewilderingly small crowd, Gap Mangione recalls that they “played like it was for a full house in NYC.” Unfortunately, the legendary location’s run was cut short when the building caught fire in 1959.
