Rochester's Mid-century Jazz Musicians
Not only was Rochester filled with a rich assortment of jazz clubs, it was and is a common meeting ground for famous jazz artists. Some musicians, like Gap and Chuck Mangione, were born in Rochester, finding their love for jazz through a childhood filled with concerts, meeting famous jazz stars, and their own music. Others, like Ron Carter, found their way to Rochester through the city’s famous Eastman School of Music. Through Rochester’s diverse array of jazz clubs in the 50s through 70s, Rochester has provided venues for jazz musicians to meet, jam, and form music groups of all kinds. Now that Rochester hosts its well-known annual Jazz Festival, many more jazz musicians have found themselves congregating in the city that has hosted legends.
